Regional Landfill Site at Taloja
The scientific disposal of Municipal solid waste is a must for the protection of environment. The Urban Local Bodies in MMR find it challenging to dispose of their daily Municipal Solid Waste in a scientific manner and as per compliances of the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000.
The scarcity of appropriate land for processing and landfill, scarcity of funds, insufficient manpower and technical backing, large capital expenditure required for small projects including its maintenance and execution costs are challenges before ULB's. The local residents also make several representations against landfill site and or waste disposal site near their village or city.
The Authority, in accordance with the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules, 2000, has decided to develop a scientific Solid Waste Management Project which will be useful for the next 25 years. The facility will cater to the nearby Urban Local Bodies in the Metropolitan Region from Municipal Corporations / Councils will have the capacity to dispose of 2,500 metric tonnes of waste daily.
The Urban Development Dept. had conducted meetings with the Urban Local Bodies in MMR and they have been directed to seek approval of their General Body for joining the common facility and directed MMRDA to restructure the project by assessing Various Technological options and modes for implementing the project. Accordingly, a Preliminary Assessment Report is prepared through the Consultant and submitted to Urban Development Dept. for taking further decision on the project.
